The author considers the boundary value problem \[ \ddot x+q(t)g(x)=0, \qquad (x(\omega),\dot x(\omega)) = \Lambda(x(0),\dot x(0)), \] where \(g\) is superquadratic at \(\pm\infty\), \(g(x)x>0\) for \(x\neq 0\) and the primitive of \(g\) satisfies a certain integral condition. The function \(q\) may change sign, \(\Lambda: {\mathbb R}^2\to {\mathbb R}^2\) is positively homogeneous and \(\Lambda(p)\neq 0\) whenever \(p\neq 0\). The main theorem asserts that the above problem has infinitely many solutions. These solutions are found with the aid of a technique developed by \textit{G. J. Butler} [J. Differ. Equations 22, 467-477 (1976; Zbl 0299.34050)] and based on the study of the Poincaré map. Subsequently some applications of the main result are given. In particular, it is shown that if \(\Lambda\) is a rotation by an angle \(\lambda\), then there exist solutions with a prescribed large number of zeros; furthermore, for each \(m\geq 2\), the equation has infinitely many periodic solutions of minimal period \(m\omega\).
