\textit{J.~Heinonen} and \textit{I.~Holopainen} suggested an analytic definition for quasiregularity on two-step Carnot groups [see J. Geom. Anal. 7, No. 1, 109-148 (1997; Zbl 0905.30018)]. They demonstrated the possibility of constructing a theory of quasiregular mappings on Carnot groups. However, their assumption about the smoothness of such mappings is not natural. In the article under review, the author gives a natural definition for quasiregular mappings on the Heisenberg group. This definition can be regarded as a natural generalization of the original definition by Yu.~G.~Reshetnyak. One of the key point in the study of the mappings with bounded distortion of Euclidean spaces is the morphism property of solutions to associated quasilinear elliptic equations. The main result is a theorem asserting that the morphism property is possessed by solutions to associated subelliptic equations for the mappings with bounded distortion on the Heisenberg group in the sense of the definition given by the author. To prove this theorem, the author introduces an averaging on the Heisenberg group and establishes some properties of it. The author hopes that further analysis along Reshetnyak's approach will clarify the main topological properties of these mappings.
