The authors investigate tree like hierarchically coupled maps in a onedimensional lattice. The one-parameter local coupling map is chaotic in the unit interval and the identity elsewhere. In [\textit{H. Chate} and \textit{P. Manneville}, Physica D 32, 409-422 (1988; Zbl 0656.76055)] it was used as a model for spatiotemporal intermittency. Here, for hierarchical coupling, the transition to turbulence via the coupling strength is numerically explored, critical exponents computed and no non-trivial collective behaviour is found.
