Let \(k\) be an infinite field, \(R=k[X_1, \dots, X_n,Y_1, \dots,Y_m]\) the polynomial ring in \(m+n\) variables over \(k\). Consider the grading on \(R\) defined by \(\deg X_i=(1,0)\), \(\deg Y_j=(0,1)\). A bigraded ideal is an ideal of \(R\) homogeneous with respect to this grading. Allowing only coordinate changes in the \(X\)'s and the \(Y\)'s separately, the bigeneric initial ideal of \(I\), \(\text{bigin}(I)\) is defined to be the initial ideal of \(g(I)\), where \(g\) is a general coordinate change in this sense. Several results similar to the ones existing for generic initial ideals are proved. On the other hand, the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of an ideal is shown not to be always equal to the one of its bigeneric initial ideal. Bigeneric initial ideals are also applied to the study of diagonal subalgebras of a bigraded algebra. Finally, introducing bilex ideals, it is shown that for any bigraded ideal, there exists a (not necessarily unique!) bilex ideal with the same Hilbert function.
