In the early XIX century ``continental'' analysis found its way to Scotland, some years before Cambridge. There was, however, controversy whether to teach Euclidean geometry or new analysis. The paper depicts the transitional period in Scottish mathematics focused upon figures of John Leslie (1766-1832), William Wallace (1768-1843), James Ivory (1765-1842), and Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) who later made a literary career.
