The author studies Hyers-Ulam stability of functional equations of the form \(g(x+1)= \varphi(x)g(x)\) for real-valued functions \(g\) defined on \((0,\infty)\). Here \(\varphi:(0,\infty) \to(0,\infty)\) is a given function such that the function \(x\to\gamma(x)= \sum^\infty_{j=0} \prod^j_{i= 0}1/ \varphi(x+i)\) is bounded. A typical result is: If \(|g(x+1)-\varphi(x) g(x) |\leq\delta\) then there exists exactly one function \(f\) such that \(f(x +1)= \varphi(x)f(x)\) and \(|g(x)-f(x) |\leq\gamma (x)\delta\). The author obtains similar theorems for modified Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability. Results by \textit{S.-M. Jung} [see Mathematica 39, No. 2, 233-237 (1997; Zbl 0907.39026) and Result. Math. 33, No. 3-4, 306-309 (1998; Zbl 0907.39027)] on the stability of the gamma functional equation are consequences.
