Dynamical systems of the form \(f(x)=x^n\) or \(f(x)=x^n+q(x)\), \(f:\mathbb Q_p\to\mathbb Q_p\) where \(q\) is a polynomial whose coefficients are \(p\)-adically small are studied. Standard results about the existence of roots of unity in the \(p\)-adic numbers are used to relate the number of cycles for \(f\) to arithmetic properties of \(n,p\), and the cycle length. An investigation is made of how the number of cycles of given length for fixed \(f\) varies with the prime \(p\); Dirichlet's theorem is used to establish a uniformity in this.
