The paper deals with balance laws of mass, momentum and energy for a broad class of one-dimensional nonlinear thermoviscoelastic materials. For the initial-boundary value problem describing the pinned end points held at constant temperature, the author proves the existence and uniqueness of temporally global classical solutions for unrestricted initial data. The method given in the paper can be applied to all boundary conditions for pinned or stress-free end points which are held at contant temperature or insulated. An interesting feature of the developed theory is that solid-like and gaseous materials can be treated in a unified manner.
