This book is about a vast array of applications of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic to industrial problems and systems engineering. The material will appeal to practitioners in the area looking for a balanced exposure to the essence of the technology of fuzzy sets and its applied side. The text arose from a series of short courses delivered by the author to industrial and professional groups. The text concentrates on the practical facet of fuzzy sets. The leitmotiv of the book is the following. Fuzzy sets permeate practical problems, as uncertainty and information granules are omnipresent there. The discussion dwells on several fundamental concepts of fuzzy sets such as fuzzy relations, fuzzy set operations, fuzzy numbers and a compositional rule of inference along with rule-based computing. The material is carefully organized into two parts consisting of seven chapters and one appendix. All necessary prerequisites are organized in Chapter 1 and the appendix. Part I is concerned with processes and materials and discusses how fuzzy sets are applied to flow processes, thermal processes as well as materials technology. Part II is devoted to systems applications and includes control engineering (fuzzy controllers, hierarchical controllers, adaptive controllers), industrial engineering (with a list of essential topics such as resource assignment, inventory control, quality control, to name a few), and management sciences.
