It is known that in strain-softening materials the localization can produce progressively evolving microcracks. Here this effect is studied in a strain-softening bar. The model is based on a constitutive strain-stress relationship with two slopes, one positive providing the linear behaviour and described by a hyperbolic equation, and the other negative described by an elliptic equation. The authors obtain a stable unique solution for the discussed problem, and calculate the diffusion speed of moving material boundary separating the softening and nonsoftening parts.
