Let \(H\) be the (one-dimensional) matrix-valued Schrödinger operator of the type \[ H= -{d^2\over dx^2}\otimes I+ V(x) \] acting on \(L^2(\mathbb{R}; \mathbb{C}^N)\). \(V(x)\) is a negative definite Hermitian \(N\times N\)-matrix with elements which are smooth functions of compact support, \(-\lambda j\) are infinitely many negative eigenvalues of \(H\). The authors claim to present an elementary proof of the inequality \[ \sum^L_{j=1} \lambda^{3/2}_j\leq {3\over 16} \int_{\mathbb{R}} \text{Tr}(V(x)^2) dx \] (Laptev-Weidl). A short proof of this inequality for a scalar \(V(x)\) is first given. This sets the stage for the proof of the matrix case.
