Two types of dimension, covering dimension (dim) and small inductive dimension (ind) are involved. In the dimension theory of separable metrizable spaces, dim and ind agree, but they need not coincide even in arbitrary metrizable spaces [\textit{R. Engelking}, Theory of dimensions, finite and infinite, Sigma Ser. Pure Math. 10 (1995; Zbl 0872.54002)]. The spaces in this work are at least \(T_1\) and regular; by compactum, the authors mean compact \(T_2\)-space. Given a regular \(T_1\)-space \(X\), there is a class \(T(X)\) of regular \(T_1\)-spaces called the tailings of \(X\) (see Definition 2.1). Beginning with a compactum \(X\) such that dim\(X= \)ind\(X>0\), the authors use a certain concrete application of the construction of tailings to produce a compactum \(Y\) with \(\text{ind }Y=\dim X+1> \dim X =\dim Y\). Using these tailings again (Section 4), they produce certain compacta \(X(n)\), \(Y(n)\), and \(Z(n)\) for \(n\geq 2\) with the following properties: (1) \(Z(n)\) is metrizable, (2) \(\dim X(n)= \operatorname {ind}X(n)=\dim Y(n)=\operatorname {ind}Y(n)=\dim Z(n)=n\), and (3) \(\dim (X(n)\times Z(n))=\dim (Y(n))^2=2n-1\), where (4) \(2n-1<\operatorname {ind}(X(n)\times Z(n))\), and (5) \(2n-1<\operatorname {ind}(Y(n))^2\). The authors note that special cases of tailings were introduced in [\textit{B. A. Pasynkov}, Sov. Math. Dokl. 10, 1402-1406 (1969); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 189, 254-257 (1969; Zbl 0205.52803)], but that the English translation in that case of the term tailing was given as ``envelope''.
