The author studies patterns obtained by covering a regular triangular grid with black and white circles in a dense hexagonal packing with a simple symmetric local matching rule. These patterns are associated with a cellular automaton generating the Pascal triangle modulo 2. The author gives analytic conditions for these patterns to be symmetric, and computes the cardinalities of the symmetry classes, in relation with properties of the Pascal matrix.
