The author studies the global existence of solutions of the parabolic system \[ \left.\begin{aligned} u_t-\Delta u &= au^r+ bv^p\\ v_t-\Delta v &= cu^q+ dv^s\end{aligned}\right\}\text{ on }\mathbb{R}^n\times (0,\infty) \] subject to initial conditions \(u(x, 0)= \varphi(x)\geq 0\), \(u(x, 0)= \psi(x)\geq 0\) for \(x\in\mathbb{R}^n\), and gives conditions on the positive constants \(a\), \(b\), \(c\), \(d\), \(p\), \(q\), \(r\) and \(s\) for which the system has nonnegtive solutions which exist for all time. The conclusions can be summarized as follows: (1) If \(r\leq 1\), \(s\leq 1\) and \(pq\leq 1\) then there is a global nonnegative solution which grows polynomially in time if all these inequalities are strict and exponentially otherwise. (2) If (i) \(r> 1\) and \(\varphi(x)\geq C(1+ M|x|^2)^{- m}\) or (ii) \(s>1\) and \(\psi(x)\geq C(1+ M|x|^2)^{- m}\) or (iii) \(pq> 1\) and both \(\varphi\) and \(\psi\) satisfy the above inequality, then every solution with sufficiently large initial conditions blows up before time \(1/M\). The paper goes on to give more specific results when the parameters are further constrained. The proofs are based on careful comparison arguments using the integral representation of the solutions of parabolic equations.
