\(H_\infty\) optimization of controllers and filters makes often use of linear matrix inequalities (LMI) techniques [cf. e.g. \textit{P. Gahinet} and \textit{P. Apkarian}, ``A linear matrix inequality approach to \(H_\infty\) control'', Int. J. Robust Nonlinear Control 4, No. 4, 421-448 (1994; Zbl 0808.93024)]. Usually, this is done in the frequency domain. In this different case, the paper considers the \(H_\infty\) optimization problem of an IIR filter having constraints in the time domain. This means that an envelope is given as a constraint on the error function of the IIR filter, possibly depending on the filter input. This problem is converted into an LMI optimization task and is finally solved. A numerical example is given using the LMI toolbox of MATLAB, and is discussed in detail.
