Given a list \((a_1, \ldots, a_5)\) of positive real numbers, the pentagon spaces \(\text{Pol} (a_1, \ldots, a_5)\) are defined as the spaces of 5-step closed piecewise-linear paths in \(\mathbb R^3\) starting at the origin, with lengths \(a_1, \ldots, a_5\) considered up to \(SO(3)\)-rotation. A nearly-regular pentagon space is one in which the sum of any two lengths is less than the sum of the other three. \((P, \omega):=\text{Pol}(1,1,1,1,1)\) is called the symplectic regular pentagon space. In the case of pentagons with distinct edge-lengths, they are symplectomorphic to toric varieties. The authors prove the interesting and surprising result that the regular pentagon space admits no symplectic circle actions although it is diffeomorphic to the nearby nearly-regular pentagon spaces. In particular it is calculated that \(\text{Pol}(1,1,1,1,1)\) has Riemann-Roch number \(6\), Euler characteristic \(7\) and symplectic volume \(5/2\).
