The authors present a rigorous explanation for obtaining the Kerr-Newman metric, as axisymmetric solutions of Einstein's field equations, in the Newman-Janis algorithm (NJA). They specify precisely what NJA is and what are the circumstances and what is the choice of the complexification in order to obtain a generation of a solution of Einstein's equations from another one. Then they explore the possibility of generalizing the algorithm to arbitrary seed metrics with the view to generating perfect fluid interior solutions of Einstein's equations.
