The evolution of strings in the equatorial plane of a Kerr-Newman black hole is studied. Three classes of exact solutions for the equations of motion are obtained in the case of a closed string encircling the black hole. It is shown that all these solutions depend on two arbitrary integration functions and two constants. An efficiency coefficient for the energy extraction is then calculated for the first class of solutions. It is suggested that the method used in this paper could be extended to the case where the string motion is not bounded to the equatorial plane. Also, it is remarked that it would be very interesting to consider more general extended objects (like p-branes) and examine the energy-extraction processes in a similar way.
