The authors construct and study a model for intracellular calcium wave propagation. Two versions of the model, a two-dimensional and a three-dimensional autonomous differential system are studied numerically. In both versions, solitary waves in the excitable regime arise via homoclinic bifurcations in the traveling wave equations. The existence of a heteroclinic cycle acts as an organizing center for the formation of different branches of homoclinic orbits.
