The authors study the complex projective manifolds \(X\) which carry a complex contact structure. They prove that if \(X\) is a \(2n+1\)-dimensional projective contact manifold with a line bundle \(L\) and the canonical bundle \(K_X\) is not nef, i.e. that there is a curve \(C\subset X\) such that \(K_X.C<0\), then either \(X\) is Fano with the second Betti-number equal 1, or there exists a smooth projective manifold \(Y\) such that \((X,L)\) is isomorphic to the pair of projective space \(\mathbb{P}(T_Y)\) and a line bundle \({\mathcal O}_{\mathbb{P}(T_Y)}(1)\). They also show that \(K_X\) is not nef if \(X\) has more than one contact structure and that \(K_X\) is not nef if a certain stability property of \(T_X\) holds.
