    The author classifies the functions \( q^{+}, q^{-} \in L^{\infty } (0,1) \) , which make the problem \[ x'' + q^{+} (t) x^{+} - q^{-} (t) x^{-} = 0,\quad x(0) =0 = x(1), \] to have at least one nontrivial solution. Then, he discusses the existence of solutions to the problem \[ x'' + f(t,x)=0, \quad x(0)=0=x(1). \]
