The author deals with a hyperbolic nonlinear conservation law with a point source of the form \[ u_t+ f(u)_x= g(u)(a^R- a^L)\delta.\tag{\(*\)} \] The case of the nonlinear resonance (\(f'(u)\) if around zero) is treated. First, the construction of the Riemann problem solution is described. Then the global existence of a weak continuous solution to the Cauchy problem is shown by means of the Glimm scheme. Because of non-strict hyperbolicity of the associated system (the resonant behavior), the total variation of \(u\) at any time cannot be bounded directly as the total variation of the initial data is only of bounded variation. The convergence of the scheme is established by considering the variation of a new variable. Further, a well-balanced numerical scheme of Godunov type is designed for the solution of the phenomenon of resonance. The convergence of this scheme is established with the same techniques used in the analysis of the Godunov scheme. Existence of the solution to \((*)\) is studied also as a limit of the selfsimilar vanishing viscosity method. Several numerical experiments are presented.
