This paper gives a survey of the present state of computational algebraic geometry. This very useful work contains a lot of information and around one hundred references. There are many beautiful illustrations of geometrical objects. It is impossible to give a complete review of this 37 pages paper, I shall only present a list of the main topics treated in this survey. Quoting the author: ``One of the aims of this paper is to show, by means of examples, the usefulness of computer algebra to mathematical research.'' The main tool is Gröbner bases. The different sections of this survey are: -- introduction to pictures (examples: Clebsch and Cayley cubics, Barth sextic, Whitney's umbrella, \dots) -- some problems in algebraic geometry (ideal membership problem, elimination, intersection of ideals, solving polynomial equations, Hilbert polynomial, \dots), -- some global algorithms: primary decomposition, normalization, -- singularities and standard bases, -- some local algorithms: classification of singularities, deformations, -- computer algebra solutions for singularity problems: exactness of the Poincaré complex, Zariski's multiplicity conjecture, curves with a maximal number of singularities. The paper ends with a section entitled: ``What else is needed?'', where the author gives some information on topics not treated in detail in his paper: resolution of singularities, computation in power-series rings, dependence of parameters, symbolic-numeric algorithms and non-commutative algorithms.
