For a pair \((X,E)\) where \(X\) is a compact complex manifold of dimension \(n\) and \(E\) is an ample vector bundle of rank \(r<n\) on \(X\), \textit{H. Ishihara} had defined and studied a non-negative integral invariant \(g(X,E)\) [see part I of this paper: Commun. Algebra 27, 4327-4335 (1999; Zbl 0995.14016)]. The pairs \((X,E)\) with \(g(X,E) \leq 1\) were classified. In the paper under review, the classification of \((X,E)\) with \(g(X,E) =2\), \(r>1\) is done for \(E\) having a section whose zero locus is a submanifold of codimension \(r\). If \(E\) is ample and spanned, then the classification of \((X,E)\) is done in the following cases: (1) \(g(X,E) =3\), \(r>1\); (2) \(g(X,E) = q(X)+1\), \(r>1\); (3) \(g(X,E)= q(X)+2\) and \(r>1\) or \(r=1\), \(n=2\). Here \(q(X)\) denotes the irregularity of \(X\). It is shown that \(g(X,E) \geq 2 q(X)-1\) for \(r>1\) and the inequality holds for \(r=1\) except in one case. It is also shown that for a fibration \(f:X\to C\) over a curve, \(g(X,E) \geq g(C)\), the genus of \(C\).
