The first main result of this paper is that the Birman-Wenzl algebras (also known as Birman-Murakami-Wenzl algebras or BMW algebras) are cellular in the sense of \textit{J. J. Graham} and \textit{G. I. Lehrer} [Invent. Math. 123, No. 1, 1-34 (1996; Zbl 0853.20029)]. This generalizes the corresponding result for the Brauer algebra, which is well known and considerably easier to establish. A parametrizing set for the irreducible modules of the algebra is given in terms of restricted partitions. The methods use an unusual version of the Hecke algebra of type \(A\) which is Frobenius over a field but not necessarily cellular. The final section derives necessary and sufficient conditions for the Birman-Wenzl algebra to be quasi-hereditary in the sense of \textit{E. Cline}, \textit{S. Parshall} and \textit{L. Scott} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 391, 85-99 (1988; Zbl 0657.18005)]. Some homological and representation-theoretic consequences of this fact are noted.
