The classical theory of continued fractions was extended by Artin to the case where \(\mathbb Z,\mathbb Q,\mathbb R\) are replace by \(\mathbb F[x]\), \(\mathbb F(x)\), and \(\mathbb F((x^{-1}))\) respectively \((\mathbb F((x^{-1}))\) denotes the field of formal Laurent series over \(\mathbb F)\), where \(\mathbb F\) is a (commutative) field. The authors give a nice survey of the theory in the case where \(\mathbb F\) is a finite field. More precisely they study the usual (Artin) expansion, the semiregular expansion and the Lüroth expansion. They are interested in particular in analogues of the theorem of Galois, and in metric properties of the dynamical systems generated by these expansions. The paper ends with a quick survey of other results (Diophantine approximation, continued fractions with bounded partial quotients, connection with arithmetic) and with a bibliography of 84 items.
