In the paper under review \(4\)-dimensional Riemannian manifolds \((M^{4},g)\), whose self-dual component \(W^{+}\) of the Weyl curvature tensor \(W\) is harmonic, are investigated. Let \(\chi(M^{4})\) and \( \sigma (M^{4})\) denote the Euler characteristic and the signature of a given manifold, respectively. By \(Y(g)\) we denote the Yamabe invariant of \(g\). The main result of this paper is the following theorem: Let \(M^{4}\) be a closed, compact, oriented four-dimensional manifold. Let \(g\) be a metric which satisfies \(\delta _{g} W^{+}_{g} = 0\) and \(Y(g) > 0\). Then, either \((M^{4},g)\) is anti-self-dual, or \[ \int | W^{+}_{g} | ^{2}\, d\,\text{vol}\, (g) \leq \frac{4}{3} \pi ^{2} (2 \chi (M^{4}) + 3 \sigma (M^{4}))\, . \] Furthermore, equality holds in the above formula if and only if \(g\) is a positive Einstein metric which is either Kähler, or the quotient of a Kähler manifold by a free, isometric, anti-holomorphic involution. Some applications of this result to positive Einstein manifolds are given.
