This work deals with the optimum shape design of openings of elliptical form, localized in a compressive stress field. The study is based on finite element modeling, for an extended Mohr-Coulomb elastoplastic model providing Cosserat type microstructure. The Cosserat model is adopted to regularize the ill-posed problems in strain softening materials. It is found that the elliptical shape openings, with the major axis parallel to the major principal far-field stress, are more ''stable'' than the corresponding circular openings. This result is obtained by analyzing the stress concentration around the opening, and by considering the hole convergence.
