    The author studies the matrix continued fraction associated with the resolvent of a special band operator. The orthogonal vector polynomials (of dimension \(q\)) satisfy a `lacunary' recurrence relation of the form \[ zH_n=H_{n+q}+a_{n-p}H_{n-p},\;a_{n-p}\not= 0, \] in matrix formulation \[ z\begin{pmatrix} H_0 \cr \ddots \cr H_n \cr \ddots\end{pmatrix} = A \begin{pmatrix} H_0 \cr \ddots \cr H_n \cr \ddots\end{pmatrix} \] with \[ A=\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 0 & \cdots & 0 & 1 & & & \cr \vdots & \vdots & & & & \ddots & & \cr a_1 & 0 & \cdots & 0 & 0 & & 1 & \cr & \ddots & & & & & & \ddots\end{pmatrix} \] They are orthogonal with respect to the functional defined by the matrix moments \(f^{\nu}=(f_{i,j}^{\nu})\) induced by the Weyl function \(\mathbf F\): \[ R_z=(zI-A)^{-1},\;f_{i,j}(z)=(R_ze_{i-1},e_{j-1})\text{ with }1\leq i\leq p,\;1\leq j\leq q,\;f_{i,j}(z)=\sum_{v\geq 0} {f_{i,j}^{\nu}\over z^{\nu +1}} \] and \({\mathbf F}=(f_{i,j})\). The main results are explicit expressions for the matrix moments using so called `genetic sums' in terms of the coefficients \(a_n\), recurrence relations and an expansion of \(\mathbf F\) in a matrix continued fraction. Moreover, the case where also the main diagonal of \(A\) is different from zero is looked into and the square case (\(p=q\)) -- where one can deal with matrix orthogonality -- is touched upon.
