The authors consider the following problem \[ {\partial u\over\partial t}- \nabla(a\nabla u)+ c=0, \] where \(a\) is a function of \(x\) and \(u\), \(c\) is a function of \(x\), \(t\), \(u\) and \(\nabla u\), \(u\) is zero on the boundary, and the initial values of \(u\) are given. They formulate finite element approximations to the problem and derive error estimates. The convergence of the iterative process involved is verified and the method is illustrated by an example. The results are satisfactory.
