Let \(R\) be a commutative ring. An \(R\)-module \(L\) is said to be cocyclic if \(L\) is isomorphic to a submodule of \(E(R/m)\) for some maximal ideal \(m\) of \(R\). Let \(M\) be an \(R\)-module. A prime ideal \(p\) of \(R\) is called a coassociated prime of \(M\) if there exists a cocyclic homomorphic image \(L\) of \(M\) such that \(p=\text{Ann}(L)\). The author gives a survey of some recent research on associated and coassociated primes. Some open questions and further directions of research are presented.
