The author considers the problem of compactification of moduli spaces of stable vector bundles over polarized non-algebraic complex surfaces. In contrast to the case of projective surfaces where smooth projective compactifications can be realized in a natural way as moduli spaces of semi-stable sheaves, there are no natural compactifications in the non-algebraic case and the usual constructions lead to compact spaces which a priori have only a real analytic structure. Under some special conditions on the topological invariants ensuring the non-existence of properly semi-stable vector bundles the author constructs compactifications by using the set of isomorphy classes of stable sheaves inside the moduli space of simple sheaves. He shows that the canonical map of this set to the Uhlenbeck compactification of the moduli space of anti-self-dual connections is proper, getting in this way a complex-analytic compactification. In particular this method leads to examples of moduli spaces of stable sheaves over primary Kodaira surfaces which are compact holomorphically symplectic manifolds.
