Theorem 1 is an inequality of Hardy type on an interval \((a,b)\) with respect to differences and two weights. This is used to study in Theorems 2 - 4 the following question. Let \(f \in W^{\lambda (\cdot)}_p (a,b)\), where \(W^{\lambda (\cdot)}_p (a,b)\) is a generalized Sobolev-Slobodeckij space. Let \(f^0\) be the extension by zero outside of \((a,b)\) to \(\mathbb R\). What can be said about the smoothness of \(f^0\)? Similar problems are treated in two dimensions with respect to bounded domains with irregular boundaries.
