For understanding of the emergence of the black hole entropy the authors investigate the transition from a nonsingular spacetime to one with a horizon. In the paper it is shown that an external observer cannot have any information about the interior of the quasi-black hole. This leads to the conclusion that the external observer would most naturally describe the state of the above-mentioned interior in terms of a density matrix obtained by tracing over the degrees of freedom inside the quasi-horizon. Qualitative calculations show that the entropy of the interior is similar to the standard black hole result.
