Upwind methods are usually used in the computation of high-speed compressible flows. In the presence of boundary or shear layers, however, they often lead to wrong solutions due to artificial dissipation being triggered by high gradients in the layers. The paper tries to analyse this behaviour of upwind methods using a linearised set of equations which allows to understand the behaviour of upwind methods in simulating shear-like flows.
