The authors consider the Cauchy problem for a linear hyperbolic system determined by a differential operator \(P(x,D)\) of order \(m\) with coefficients in the space of \(N\times N\)-matrices depending smoothly on the variable \(x\in\Omega\), \(\Omega\) is an open subset of \({\mathbb R}^{n+1}\). The main result of the paper is the formulation of new necessary conditions for the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem under consideration, in the general case when multiple characteristics can appear. In particular this conditions include a set of restrictions on the homogeneous parts of the principal symbol of lower order, near any multiple characteristic point. The authors also give some applications of their results.
