Suppose that \(K\) is an appropriate Calderón-Zygmund kernel in \(\mathbb{R}^n\), and let \[ I_\lambda(f)(x)= \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} e^{i\lambda\cdot y} K(y) f(x-y) dy. \] Then the famous Carleson-Sjölin theorem says that the mapping \(f\to \sup_{\lambda\in\mathbb{R}^n}|I_\lambda(f)(x)|\) is bounded on \(L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)\). In this paper, the authors consider the oscillatory integral operator \[ I_\lambda(f)(x)= \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} e^{iP} \lambda^{(y)} K(y) f(x- y) dy, \] where \[ P_\lambda(y)= \sum_{2\leq|\alpha|\leq d} \lambda_\alpha y^\alpha,\quad \lambda= (\lambda_\alpha). \] They prove that the mapping \(f\to \sup_{\lambda\in \mathbb{R}^n}|T_\lambda(f)(x)|= T^*(f)(x)\) is bounded on \(L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)\). To prove the theorem, the authors choose a suitable ``bump'' function \(\phi\) supported in the unit ball, and denote \(e^{iP_\lambda (y)}\phi(y)\) by \(\Phi^\lambda(y)\). Write \(\Phi^\lambda_\alpha(y)= \alpha^{-n} \Phi^\lambda(y/\alpha)\) for \(\alpha> 0\). Then they reduce matters to the maximal operator \(f\to \sup_{|\lambda|\geq r,\alpha> 0}|(f* \Phi^\lambda_\alpha)(x)|\), and prove that such maximal operator has a norm (acting on \(L^2\)) which decays like \(O(r^{-\delta})\), for some \(\delta> 0\). A simple consequence of the arguments in the paper is that the maximal operator \(T^*(f)\) is also bounded on \(L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)\), \(1<p<\infty\). It is natural to expect that the theorems will be true if one let \(P_\lambda(y)= \sum_{1\leq|\alpha|\leq d} \lambda_\alpha y^\alpha\) in the \(T_\lambda(f)(x)\). This case was recently proved by M. Lacey when \(n=1\) and \(d=2\) in a preprint.
