    The existence and regularity of the generalized and classical solutions is studied for the telegraph system \[ \begin{aligned} u_{t}\left( t,x\right) +v_{x}\left( t,x\right) +Ru\left( t,x\right) =f_{1}\left( t,x\right) ,\;&\left( t,x\right) \in D_{T}=\left( 0,T\right) \times \left( 0,1\right) \\ v_{t}\left( t,x\right) +u_{x}\left( t,x\right) +Gv\left( t,x\right) =f_{2}\left( t,x\right) ,\;&\left( t,x\right) \in D_{T} \end{aligned} \] subject to the boundary condition \[ \left( -u\left( t,0\right) ,u\left( t,1\right) \right) \in \beta \left( v\left( t,0\right) ,v\left( t,1\right) \right) ,\;0<t<T \] and to the initial conditions \[ u\left( 0,x\right) =u_{0}\left( x\right) ,\;v\left( 0,x\right) =v_{0}\left( x\right) ,\;0<x<1. \] Here \(R\) and \(G\) are real constants and \(\beta \) is a maximal monotone operator in \(\mathbb{R}^{2}.\) Two different approaches are used to obtain the existence and regularity, namely D'Alembert representation formulae and the linear semigroup theory. The above boundary value problem is transformed into a problem of the type \[ y^{\prime }\left( t\right) +Ay\left( t\right) =f\left( y\right) \left( t\right) ,\;t>0,\;y\left( 0\right) =x, \] where \(X\) is locally Lipschitzian from \(C\left( \left[ 0,T\right] ;X\right) \) to \(L^{1}\left( 0,T;X\right) \) (\(X\) being a certain Banach space) and \(A\) is the generator of a continuous semigroup of bounded linear operators (\(A\) is an unbounded linear operator).
