Let \(X\) be a real Banach space and \(D\subset X\) a subspace. An operator \(A:D\to X^*\) is said to have an energy space \(X_A\) if \(\|u\|_A:=\inf\{k>0\mid \langle A(\frac 1k u)\frac 1k u\rangle\leq 1\}\) defines a norm on \(D\). The space \(X_A\) then is defined to be the completion of \(D\) with respect to \(\|\cdot\|_A\). The author presents some sufficient conditions for an operator to have an energy space. The main result then describes a version of the gradient method for operators with a reflexive energy space. This in turn is applied to the iterative solution of a quasilinear elliptic boundary value problem.
