A general principle is described by which from a class of curves and a curve fairness measure one can construct invariant fairness measures for surfaces. Some basic third order invariants fairness measures are defined for surfaces. Moreover, the variation in curvature, normal curvature, geodesic curvature and geodesic torsion of an arbitrary plane intersection is determind. The general principle is applied to the field of ship hull design and it is extended to the case of the fairness of a one parameter family of curves. Tests shows that the fairness measures can detect the unfair parts of ship hull.
