    Consider a finitely generated shift invariant space \( S(\Phi).\) Let \( S(\Phi)\) be nonrefinable, i.e., \(S(\Phi)^1 \not\subset S(\Phi)^{1/2}\), where \[ S(\Phi)^h := \overline{\text{span}} \{ \phi (h^{-1} \cdot -k)|\phi \in \Phi , k \in {\mathbf Z}^d \} . \] The paper discusses a generalization of decomposing of nonrefinable FSI-spaces into a sum of difference (wavelet) spaces, analogously as for refinable spaces. For that \( S(\Phi)\) is replaced by a different space \(S(\Phi_1) \) to play the role of a low-resolution space, such that \[ S(\Phi)^{1/2} = S (\Phi_1) + S(\Psi_1) \] is true. The paper describes meaningful decomposition techniques. The construction is justified by showing that such a nonstationary sequence \( \Phi_j \) can inherit special approximation properties of the decomposed nonrefinable space \( S(\Phi)\).
