This paper is devoted to the study of concentrated solutions for the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation: \[ ih{\partial \psi\over \partial t}=(-h^2/2m)\Delta\psi+ V(x)\psi-\gamma|\psi|^{p-2} \psi, \tag{1} \] where \(h>0\), \(\gamma>0\), \(\psi:\mathbb{R}^N \to\mathbb{C}\), \(V:\mathbb{R}^N\to \mathbb{R}\), \(N\geq 1\), \(p>2\). Looking for standing waves of (1), that means solutions of the form \(\psi(x,t)= \exp(-{iEt \over h})\cdot w(x)\), where \(w\) is a real-valued function, the equation for \(w\) becomes \[ -h^2\Delta w+V(x)w= |w|^{p-2}w.\tag{2} \] Under some suitable assumptions on \(V(x)\) the authors show, at least for small \(h>0\), the existence of a positive radially symmetric solution \(w_h\) to (2). Furthermore, they show that such a family \(\{w_h\}\) exhibits the following concentration behavior as \(h \to+0\): For every sequence \(h_n\to+0\) there exists a subsequence \(h_{n_k}\), such that \(w_{h_{n_k}}\) has a sphere of local maximum points \(\{x\in\mathbb{R}^N\mid |x|= r_{h_{n_k}}\}\) with \(r_{h_{n_k}} \to\widetilde r\) as \(k\to +\infty\), while \(w_{h_{n_k}}\) vanishes to zero away from the sphere \(\{x\in\mathbb{R}^N\mid |x|= \widetilde r\}\).
