The authors consider the following system of reaction-diffusion equations with absorption \[ \begin{aligned} &u_t-\Delta u=v^p-au^r,\quad t>0,\quad x\in\Omega,\\ &v_t-\Delta v=u^q-bv^s,\quad t>0,\quad x\in\Omega,\\ &u(t,x)=v(t,x)=0,\quad t>0,\quad x\in\partial\Omega,\\ &u(0,x)=u_0(x),\quad v(0,x)=v_0(x),\quad x\in \Omega\end{aligned} \] with initial data satisfying \(u_0,\;v_0\in C^0(\Omega)\) and \(u_0,\;v_0\geq 0.\) Problems of the above type model the cooperative interaction of two diffusing biological species. Optimal conditions are obtained on the exponents of the reaction and absorption terms for the existence of blowing up solutions, or for the global existence and boundedness of all solutions. The proofs of blowup rely on comparison with carefully constructed self-similar weak subsolutions with compact support.
