If \(M\) is a noncompact hyperbolic \((n+1)\)-manifold of finite volume, then \(M\) has a finite number of ends, each of the form \(E\times [0,\infty)\), where \(E\) is a closed flat \(n\)-manifold. The author considers the natural question when such an \(M\) may be embedded as a complement of a closed submanifold \(A\) in a closed \((n+1)\)-manifold \(N\). Here \(N\) is just a topological manifold, but \(A\) is assumed to have a tubular neighborhood. It is shown that the flat manifolds \(E\) must be \(S^0\)- or \(S^1\)-bundles over components of \(A\). It is then determined when flat manifolds are \(S^0\)- or \(S^1\)-bundles. Many interesting examples are given. In particular, it is shown which of the \(10\) flat \(3\)-manifolds are such bundles. In addition to classical results on flat manifolds, use is made of the topological characterization of flat manifolds of dimension \(>4\) due to \textit{F. T. Farrell} and \textit{W. C. Hsiang} [Am. J. Math. 105, 641-672 (1983; Zbl 0521.57018)].
