The main result of this work is the following Theorem: Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field and \(\Gamma\) a weakly simply connected \(k\)-algebra, then: (a) \(\Gamma\) is derived tame if and only if it is either piecewise hereditary, or it is derived equivalent to a semi-chain. (b) If the Euler form of \(\Gamma\) is non-negative, then \(\Gamma\) is derived tame if \(\text{corank }\chi_\Gamma\leq 2\) or \(\Gamma\) is a tree algebra. Here a weakly simply connected algebra is given by a sequence of algebras \(k=\Gamma_1,\Gamma_2,\dots,\Gamma_n=\Gamma\) such that \(\Gamma_{i+1}=\Gamma_i[M_i]\) or \(\Gamma_{i+1}=[M_i]\Gamma_i\) for \(M_i\) indecomposable \(\Gamma_i\)-modules, \(i=1,\dots,n-1\). Using the notion of weakly simply connectedness the theorem extends, in some sense, the results given by \textit{M. Barot, J. A. de la Peña} [Colloq. Math. 79, No. 1, 119-131 (1999; Zbl 0942.16019)] and \textit{T. Brüstle} [Compos. Math. 129, No. 3, 301-323 (2001; Zbl 1050.16008)]. The proof is based upon the weakly simply connectedness and derived subspace problems (see the appendix, written with B. Keller), using very different techniques from those in the works cited above.
