Let \(\mathcal H\) be a Hilbert space, and let \(\mathcal K\) be the space of compact operators on \(\mathcal H\). For \(p\geq 1\), the Schatten \(p\)-class \({\mathcal S}_p({\mathcal H})\) is defined by \({\mathcal S}_p({\mathcal H})=\{T\in {\mathcal H}: \|T\|s_p<\infty\}\), where \(\|T\|s_p=(\Sigma\{\lambda_n(T)^p\), \(n=1,2,3,\dots\})^{1/p}\), and \(\lambda_n(T)\), \(n = 1,2,3,\dots,\) are the eigenvalues of \(|T|=(T^*T)^{1/2}\). In addition, \({\mathcal L}^{(1,\infty)}({\mathcal H})={\mathcal S}^+_1\) denotes \(\{T\in{\mathcal H} :\|T\|_{1,\infty}<\infty\}\), where \(\|T\|_{1,\infty}= \sup\{(\log N)^{-1}\Sigma\{\lambda_n(T)\), \(n = 1,2,\dots,N\}\}\). If \(D\) is the unit disc of the complex plane \(\mathbb{C}\), and \(1\leq p < \infty\), let \(B^p(D)\) be the holomorphic Besov space over \(D\), defined by \(B^p(D)=\{f\text{ analytic on }D: \int_D|f''(z)|^p K(z,z)^{1-p} d\nu(z) < \infty\}\), where \(K(z,z) = (1-|z|^2)^{-2}\) and \(\nu\) represents the area measure in \(D\), and \(\widetilde B^+_1(D)=\{f\text{ analytic on }D : \sup \{(\log \nu_r(X))^{-1}\int_X |f|d\nu\} < \infty\}\). If \(f\in H^2(D)\), where \(H^2(D)\) represents the Hardy space of holomorphic functions, then the Hankel operator \(h_f\) is defined by \(h_f = P{\mathcal M}_f R\), where \(R : H^2(D)\to H^2(D)\) is defined by \(R(g)(z) = g(\overline z)\), and \(P\) is the projection operator from \(L^2(\partial D)\) onto \(H^2(D)\). In one of the main theorems of this paper, the author shows that \[ h_f\in {\mathcal S}_1^+\text{ if and only if }f\in B_1^+(D), \] where \(B_1^+(D)= \{f\text{ analytic on }D : f''\in \widetilde B_1^+(D)\}\). In particular, \(h_f\in {\mathcal S}_1^+\) if and only if \[ \int_{U_t}|f''|d\nu = O(\log \Lambda(U_t))\text{ if }\Lambda(U_t) > 2, \] where \(U_t = \{z\in D: |f(z)|K(z,z)^{-1} > 1/t\}\) and \(\Lambda(X) =\int_X K(z,z) d\nu(z)\). References to a number of earlier results involving the Hankel operator \(h_f\) and connections with results of quantum physics are contained in the Introduction of the paper.
