The paper is concerned with counting the number \(P_n= P(a_1, a_2,\dots, a_n)\) of nonnegative integral points satisfying \[ \frac{x_1}{a_1}+ \frac{x_2}{a_2}+\cdots \frac{x_n}{a_n}\leq 1, \] where \(a_1, a_2,\dots, a_n\) are positive real numbers. The problem is to give sharp upper bounds for \(P_n\). It was solved for \(n=3\) by \textit{Y.-J. Xu} and \textit{S. S.-T. Yau} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 423, 199-219 (1991; Zbl 0734.11048)] and for \(n=4\) by the same authors [J. Reine Angew. Math. 473, 1-23 (1996; Zbl 0844.11063)]. Continuing this work, in this paper the problem is solved for \(n=5\). The proof is quite elementary, but extremely long.
