Three characteristic mixed discontinuous finite element methods are introduced for time-dependent advection-dominated diffusion problems. The first method is based on a modified method of characteristics; conservation law is not valid. The second method adds adjusted advection; conservation law is valid globally. The third method uses local Eulerian-Lagrangian technique, and conservation law is valid locally. Detailed analysis of all methods is done, including stability and convergence. The methods surprisingly well combine merits of both characteristics-based procedures (large timesteps, e.g.) and discontinuous FEM (parallelizability etc.) The relationships to MMOC, MMOCAA, ELLAM, and CFEM are described in detail. The author's methods promise more stability and accuracy. Numerical results are given for a one-dimensional problem.
