The authors present a fair amount of technical material, providing background information from topology on stratified spaces, on differential topology and differential geometry, on vector bundles, symmetric spaces and algebraic groups. The Baily-Borel Satake compactification, parabolically induced connections and patched connections are studied. For a Hermitian locally symmetric space \(X\) and its Baily-Borel compactification \(\overline X\), the formula \[ \overline c^*(\overline X)\cap [\overline X]= c_*(1_X)\in H(\overline X;\mathbb{Z}) \] is established, for \(\overline c^*(\overline X)\in H(\overline X;\mathbb{C})\) the (cohomology) Chern class of \(\overline X\), \(\overline c^*(\overline X)\cap [\overline X]\) its homology image, and \(c_*(1_X)\) the MacPherson Chern class of \(1_X\), \(1\) on \(X\) and \(0\) on \(\overline X- X\). Finally, the cohomology of \(\overline X\) is related to the cohomology of \(\check D\), the compact dual of the symmetric space \(D= G/K=\) irreducible factor of suitable type of a standard Hermitian locally symmetric space \(X\). There is a surjection \(h: H^*_{\text{Chern}}(\overline X; \mathbb{C})\to H^*(\check D;\mathbb{C})\). This is explained in the last section.
