    Let \(\varphi :[0,\infty) \to [0,\infty)\) be a convex function such that \[ \varphi (0) = 0,\quad \lim_{x\to 0}\varphi (x)/x = 0,\quad \lim_{x\to \infty}\varphi (x)/x = \infty, \] and \(\varphi (2x)\leq K\varphi (x), x\geq 0.\) For a probability measure space \((\Omega, \mathcal A,P)\) denote by \(L^\varphi\) the space of all \(\mathcal A\)-measurable functions \(f\) such that \(\int\varphi (\lambda |f|) dP <\infty, \) for every \(\lambda >0\). If \(\mathcal L\subset \mathcal A\) is a \(\sigma\)-lattice let \(L^\varphi (\mathcal L)\) be the set of all \(\mathcal L\)-measurable functions from \(L^\phi\). Then for every \(f\in L^\varphi\) there exists an element of best \(\varphi\)-approximation \(f^*\in L^\varphi(\mathcal L)\), i.e. such that \(\int\varphi (|f-f^*|) dP = \inf \{\int \varphi(|f-h|) : h\in L^\varphi(\mathcal L)\}\). If \(\varphi\) is strictly convex then the element \(f^*\) is unique. The authors define also a notion of extended element of best approximation and prove some characterization theorems and various weak-type inequalities. The obtained results extend those obtained in the case of \(L^p\)-spaces by \textit{D. Langers} and \textit{L. Rogge} [J. Approximation Theory 31, No. 3, 199-223 (1981; Zbl 0467.41014)].
